Managing multilingual content across different media.
Marketing media requires frequent updating. When working across multiple languages and media it is a coordination challenge to ensure that all media remain consistent with one another, and updates are applied universally and in a timely fashion.
The issues
Recycling translated content. Where the same content is used across multiple media there is a waste of resources if it is re-translated again. How can you recycle a single translation across mutliple media?
Ensuring consistency of content across mutliple media. Where an update is applied in one medium (e.g. web) how can you ensure that this update is also applied in other media (e.g. print matter)?
Goal. To provide a system whereby a single translation can be recycled across mutliple media. To provide a system whereby when one set of marketing media is updated or altered, the administrator is alerted to exactly where the same/similar content is to be found. The administrator then has the discretion to apply updates across all media.
How. In terms of organisational procedure, set the website as the master marketing platform; this means the web is always updated first. Develop a 'media catalogue' within the content management system. Basically a list of all non-web based media items (CR-ROMs, print catalogues, brochures etc.).
Link specific blocks of web content to specific media. This creates a database within the CMS of where and what content is recycled elsewhere. When a particular block of content on the website is edited/updated, the administrator is automatically alerted to whereelse that content has been used. The administrator can then decide whether the alterations online justify editing the other media; or the administrator can build a catalogue of edits to be applied when the offline media is to be updated.
